Toilet Training for Older Kids

So, you thought by the time your child was 6 she would be potty trained? Well, what if she isn't completely, full proof no accidents yet? Then you have to adjust and be consistent.

Talk
The first thing you can do is something fun such as getting an ice cream and asking if there is anything she is worried about or that has been bothering her. Maybe on of the other little girls at school is being mean to her. Maybe she had to wear a pull-up at a sleep over and she is being teased. Don't confront her, it could make the child completely shut down. Let her know that you are proud of her for staying dry for so long and that you want to help her with not having accidents in the middle of the night. If you used to wet your bed, let her know that too, so she isn't embarrassed, 77 percent of children who wet the bed had bed-wetting parents.

Alarms and Timers
Sometimes you get busy taking care of something around the house, and your older child is busy playing, that when they suddenly get the urge to use the restroom, it can be too late. A great thing to do is set a timer. You can also set a wake up call to prevent the child from wetting the bed. This "moisture call" helps the child independently use the bathroom, without the parents having to remind them. After a while, the children may wake up by themselves. The child can also beat the clock by remembering to urinate before the timer goes off; it's a fun game to play for accidents.

Other Options
If you have existed all other options, and the other remedies haven't worked, you may want to consult your doctor, to make sure the child does not have any physical problems. Before you do that, you can try honey. Some people believe that a teaspoon of honey before bed can prevent bedwetting. You can give the child a bath in Johnson's Calming Lavender bath before bed, so they are relaxed, either before or after you go to bed, usually a few hours after the child. This way they get an option to use the restroom and your sleep is not disrupted. Just relax and try and make this process easier for your child.
