Parenting Skills from Your Parents

So you want to be a good parent? Ask your parents for advice. You may not get the answers you expected, but you will get the advice of people you trust who have already been where you are.

Grandparents
Most grandparents are willing to listen to what you are going through and offer you advice. They can even provide you with direct insight to the way you were compared to your child. One of the things that most grandparents will probably expect if you go to them for advice, is for you to actually take it.

Listen
Make sure that you listen to what your parents have to say. They may be biased towards you, because you are their child, but they may also be biased to your child, because they are their grandbaby. Being a grandparent, many feel they have mastered parenting skills and tips, and many of them have. When they were raising you it may have been simply expected that children did not talk back to their parents, it was unacceptable and still should be.

Take Action
Try their advice out. It may be something as simple as when you were little we didn't prop you in front of the TV all day, you went outside and play. They may give you advice that during the summer the only toys kids can play with are water guns, water balloons, sprinklers, and the swimming pool. Make sure you are disconnected from your technology too. Especially if your children are around water.

Watch the Results
You may see a sudden change in behavior when they get used to outdoor fresh air. You might also find that after a long summer day, spend running around in the sun, and drinking water, they are ready for bed at night.

Thank Your Parents
You might want to start out with an apology first. Why? Because you finally understand what they went through with you! You now have the experience to understand when a child doesn't listen and how frustrating that may be; put you also know that your own parents had your best interest at heart. Finally, thank your parents, especially if it worked. Expected feedback if it didn't and don't give up, your parents raised you. More than likely they did something right.
