Let Your Children Know Who Is Boss

The biggest mistake that many parents forget is letting their children know who is boss. In case you're not sure, it's you, the parent! You decided to have children and they are your responsibility. You need to be sure that they understand that cannot manipulate you through cute actions, or worse bad actions. Do not give them so many choices. Do not let your children disrespect you. Always listen and respect them as well.

No More Choices
The next time your picky eater doesn't want dinner, because he doesn't like chicken unless its chicken fingers, tell him he doesn't have a choice. Tell him calmly that's too bad, as that is what this family is eating. Parents used to serve one thing for dinner, if you didn't eat it, you went to bed hungry, as simple as that. A child is not going to starve. They will get hungry. The key is in being consistent. If you tell them they will have nothing else tonight, if they don't eat now, do not cave in when they through a tantrum later in the night. If they do get hungry, heat up their dinner they didn't eat, and let them know that meal was cooked for them and is still available. If two children want to watch two separate movies, do not let them fight, you choose one of the two, or pick a new one.

Do Not Let Them Boss You Around
Do not let temper tantrums or spoiled shrieking ruin your day. If you want to go shopping on a particular day, and they want to stay home and cry, do not stay home. Send them to a timeout, preferably a spot other than their room. Give them a timeout for approximately the amount of the minutes of their age. 5 years old, 5 minutes. It might be difficult, but try not to get frustrated if they don't sit there. Get down to their eye level and tell them throwing tantrums is not acceptable, and that when they are ready to apologize and tell you what they did wrong, you will now go shopping.

Taking Something Away
If the child does not want to listen, and the timeout is not effective, enact your parenting skills and take some toy that they love away. Give it back when they can tell you what they did and will not do again.
