Be The Parent You Always Wanted

Want to be a great parent, but aren't quite sure how to do it? Maybe you didn't have the best example growing up, so it is especially difficult for you to go about improving parenting skills.

Understand What You Don't Want To Be
You may have a history of abuse or neglect and now that you never want to be that type of parent. If you grew up with either of those, you know that you do not want to be that kind of parent. Write down all of the things that you don't want to be on a list. Then realize that you are not any of those things and that you never have to be. You might have certain fears growing up around a parent, or even not having a parental figure around that your parenting skills will therefore suffer. That does not have to be the case.

Know What You Want
Know visualize the type of parent that you always wanted. Feel great about the fact that you can now be that for your little one. Think about things that you wish you had been able to do with a mother or father figure. Write all of this down. Keep journals as your child grows up and whatever it is you missed out on do that with your baby.

Stick To It
At times it might get hard, or you might see yourself acting in ways such as losing your temper that trigger a memory of the parent you don't want to be. Just calm down. Talk to your child as they get older about what they would like to do. Have an open communication with your children. Let them know that they can trust you and that you want to be the best parent to them that you can. Also, talk to your spouse about your fears and doubts. You may find that they are the rock that you have been searching for to hold you up, when you're not sure about your ability as a parent. Include other family members or close friends into your child's life so that they have other positive adults to look up to. So that when they become parents, they can look back and say about you, that you are the kind of parent they want to be.
